Rustom races to Rs 100 crore in box office earnings; will it be Akshay Kumar's quickest hit?

Akshay Kumar with Ileana D'Cruz in a scene from 'Rustom'

It may have been panned for its flawed depiction of the KM Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra case, from which it is inspired.
The inauthentic detailing — be it in the costumes or props — hasn't slipped by commentors.

And as for reviews about the performances of its cast, well those have been mixed.
But all that doesn't seem to have mattered one whit to Akshay Kumar's Rustom, which is fast racing towards the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office.
Rustom has helped cement Akshay Kumar's reputation as one of the most bankable stars in the Hindi film industry today — in the face of potential competition from the Hrithik Roshan-Ashutosh Gowarker historical Mohenjo Daro.
It has also further cemented Akshay's 'poster child of patriotism' persona, developed through films like Airlift, Baby, Holiday, Gabbar is Back and others.
However, Rustom has also helped Akshay set a record of his own: It is being called possibly his quickest 100-crore earner so far.
Merely a week after its release (on 12 August), Rustom is already being counted among the top-five earners of 2016 so far. The top spot is occupied by Salman kKan's Sultan (at Rs 300+ crore) — but the next three spots are all taken up by Akshay's films: Airlift (Rs 127+ cr); Housefull 3 (Rs 107+ cr) and Rustom, collections for which currently stand at Rs 90 cr, as per this report by trade website KoiMoi. Shah Rukh Khan's Fan rounds off the top-five with lifetime collections of Rs 85 crores.
While it currently stands at the number four spot, trade experts have pointed out that Rustom in fact, has reported the second-highest week one earnings of any film in 2016.
Sultan — on the back of a nearly nine-day opening week (thanks to the public holiday for Eid) — netted a cool Rs 200 crore in its first week.
Rustom too has had the benefit of the Independence Day weekend, in addition to partial holidays for Navroze and Raksha Bandhan that have drawn more footfalls to the theatres.
Akshay's previous film — Airlift — had earned around Rs 85 crores in its first week.
It is expected that Rustom will add to its coffers over its second weekend. And with no major films in the running — Happy Bhag Jayegi and UNIndian both cater to niche audiences after all — there's nor reason why it shouldn't.

Rustom box office day 3 collection: Akshay Kumar’s film is unstoppable

Rustom, Rustom box office, rustom akshay kumar, akshay kumar, rustom box office collection, Rustom day 2 box office collections, Rustom movie box office collections, entertainment news, bollywood

Akshay Kumar’s Rustom is reaching new heights with each passing day at the box office. The movie, which is loosely based on the infamous case of KM Nanavati vs State of Maharashtra, struck the right chords with the audiences. Despite the box office clash with director Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo Daro starring Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde, Rustom managed to rake in the moolah at the box office. It minted Rs. 30.54 crore in just two days of its release.
Trade analysts have been predicting Rs 100-crore business for this Akshay Kumar starrer since the movie will be benefitted by Monday also being a holiday due to Independence Day. Rustom has also been garnering praises for its intriguing storyline and Akshay Kumar’s new avatar seems to have worked wonders for the film. While Rustom is riding high on the strong word of mouth from the viewers, the movie’s collections is expected to rise and will put up a strong total at the box office.
On Friday, the day of release, Rustom collected Rs. 14.11 crore at the ticket window. The movie found its place among the top five openers of 2016 and secured the fourth position in the list. On day two, Saturday, the movie witnessed a growth of 16.44% in its collections and earned Rs. 16.43 cr. at the box office. On day three, Sunday, Rustom is expected to rake in about Rs. 14-18 crore at the box office.
Rustom has a strong hold on the international market also. It collected $1.24 million [₹ 8.30 cr] overseas. The movie was unstoppable in UAE-GCC. Here’s the overseas breakup: Thu AED 1 million, Fri AED 1.3 million, Sat AED 800,000. Total: AED 3.1 million [₹ 5.65 cr]. (Rustom box office day 2 collection: Akshay Kumar’s film mints Rs. 30.54 cr)
Among the top five openers of the year, two belong to Akshay himself. While his Housefull 3 earned Rs 15.21 crore on day 1, Airlift’s tally was 12.35 crore. Both went on to do over Rs 100-crore business.
Rustom is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and also stars Ileana D’Cruz, Arjan Bajwa and Esha Gupta. Akshay plays a naval commander in the film who is accused of killing his wife’s lover. It was released over 2,317 screens across cities in India and 550-plus overseas.

Akshay Kumar dancing on Uptown Funk in just his underwear is funnier than the entire Housefull franchise

Akshay Kumar dancing on Uptown Funk in just his underwear is funnier than the entire Housefull franchise – watch video!

You remember the guy Akshay Kumar in  the 90’s? Well back then he was not popular for movies like Airlift or Baby. He has some very embarrassing movies in his kitty from the 90’s. And one embarrassing scene from one of such movies is back to haunt us. A video of hairy Akshay Kumar bathing and dancing on the tubes Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk is getting a hell lot of clicks on the Internet and you better join the herd ‘cus it’s awesome and cringe-worthy at the same time!

Akshay Kumar in the 90’s wasn’t the same guy we know him as today. Women swoon when the actor takes his shirt off in movies. But demand and supply in the 90’s was a little different, we suppose. There is this shirtless scene from Akshay’s film Suhaag that features him, before the concept of metrosexuality hit him, dancing ecstatically while bathing in a blue underwear. Somebody decided to merge this scene with the popular song Uptown Funk. Because why not? The result is no less than a miracle. If you are getting bored on Saturday evening, this video might cheer you up, (given you don’t go through Snapstories of your friends hanging out at clubs or restaurants and going for long drives).

Everything Rajini does is stylish’

Akshay Kumar. Photo: R. Ravindran

All of us have seen that leaked photo of a scary-looking Akshay Kumar on the sets of 2.0. News has already spread that Akshay plays a mad scientist who transforms into a crow on account of a freak accident. But Akshay laughs it off. “It’s just a gimmick. It’s news to me that I play a mad scientist.” Prod him further, and he simply says, “There’s a lot more than whatever you have seen and read about my character. You are in for many surprises. In fact, I’m glad that these rumours are doing the rounds because people will find something else in the film.” I ask him about his costume and make-up that reportedly took up to six hours every day. He laughs. “No matter how you phrase your question, I can’t reveal any more.”But he does say that when he was all made-up, he dined at Bombay Brasserie on College Road, Nungambakkam. “I’m happy nobody paid attention because I got to enjoy the food.”
On Rajinikanth, he says, “I’m a huge fan and cannot wait for Kabali’s release.” He says he has heard and read about the phenomenon that Rajini is in Tamil Nadu, but only now does he truly know the extent of his superstardom. “I cannot imagine people loving someone so much that they apply for leave to watch a film. I am also among those waiting to see him in his gangster look of the 70’s.” Akshay says that on the first day of 2.0’s shoot, all eyes were on Rajini. “There was a moment when he brushed off something on his pant, and the whole unit was awestruck by how stylishly he did it. Everything he does is stylish. I tried a few things to be like him, but failed,” he laughs. Akshay is happy for this opportunity. “Not many know that I’ve done a Kannada film, but doing a Rajini film is something else. I am going to be punched by him in the film for sure. I hope my fans will like it.”

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9:' Akshay Kumar to promote 'Rustom' on the show?

Dance reality show "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9" is yet to start, but names of celebrity guests appearing on the show have already started doing the rounds. After Hrithik Roshan, reports of Akshay Kumar appearing in one of the episodes have now surfaced online.
Akshay will appear on the show to promote his Aug. 12 release "Rustom," Tellychakkar reported. However, there has been no official announcement from the makers of "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 9" or Akshay on the same.
There are also unconfirmed reports that Hrithik would be the first guest on the show. He will appear to promote his film "Mohenjo Daro," which also releases on the same day as "Rustom."
Meanwhile, the reality show is expected to go on air by the end of this month on Colors TV. Karan Johar, Jacqueline Fernandez and Ganesh Hegde will judge the show, while viewers' favourite Manish Paul will return as the host.
Manish has hosted "Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa" for four years now and the ninth season will mark his fifth year on the dance reality show. And to host the show, he has apparently charged Rs. 2.5 crore, making him the highest paid non-Bollywood celebrity host.

This year, nine celebrity contestants will participate, including celebrity chef Harpal Singh Soni, "Hate Story 2" actress Surveen Chawla, "Bigg Boss 9" fame Karishma Tanna, "Swaragini" actress Helly Shah, "Meri Aashiqui Tum Se Hi" actor Shakti Arora, "Naagin" actor Arjun Bijlani, YouTube sensations and Bharatnatyam/Hip-Hop fusion dancing twins Priyanka and Poonam Shah and Shopkeeper Gaurav Gera as chutki.
